Our Services

Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre provides the following services and products to industry, utilities, and government and international agencies:

Consultancy

Through global, regional and site-specific studies. Recently completed studies include volcanic and seismic risk in Iceland and Seismic risk in China.

Vetting

By evaluation and appraisal of published data and models.

Information

Via an information service and the publication of event and post-loss reports. The BUHRC provides an important and heavily-used information service to the media, including all the major UK radio and television news services, and others in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. News coverage to benefit from BUHRC expertise and informed comment has included the 1999 Izmit (Turkey) and 2001 Gujarat (India) earthquakes, the UK October 2000 storms and floods, the 2001 and 2002 eruptions of Mount Etna, and the future implications of global warming.

Event and post-loss reports published by the Centre include: the Central & Eastern European Floods of July 1997; Global Warming – the View in 1998; the UK Floods of Easter 1998; the regional impacts of the 1997-8 El Nino; and Landfalling hurricanes in the Caribbean.

Other informational products include the quarterly newsletter BUHRC ALERT; Issues in Risk Science; BUHRC Technical Papers and BUHRC Working Papers in Disaster Studies and Management.

Education & Training

By means of conferences, seminars, workshops and training courses. Recent workshops organised by the Centre focused on European windstorm and the 2002 European floods. The BUHRC also operates a postgraduate certificate course in Natural Hazards for Insurers and a Masters programme in Geophysical Hazards.

Publications

Through the writing of academic and popular books, together with research papers and articles in academic and professional journals, science magazines and quality newspapers.
