Prior to the arrival of Cyclone Favio, more than
46,000 homes had been destroyed and 139,000 people displaced
by flooding, many of these lodged in resettlement centres established
to cope with a similar situation in 2001. Worst affected were
the provinces of Sofala, Tete, Manica and Zambezia, with an
estimated 320,000 people affected in total. The arrival of Favio
led to wind damage and flooding in the districts of Vilanculos,
Inhassorot, Govuro and Masinga, in the south of the country,
leaving a further 130,000 homeless, 73,000 in the town of Vilanculos.
At the time of writing, the crisis continues, with concern growing
in relation to both outbreaks of water-borne diseases and food
supply. An estimated 277,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed,
ensuring that the April-May harvest will be seriously depleted.
The cost of the flooding in monetary terms remains to be determined.
The death toll, to date, is set at 40. The total number of people
affected is 1.1. million. |
| Summary: |
|
Serious flooding in Mozambique was triggered
by torrential regional rains in December 2006 that led to overflowing
of the Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi River, which traps the
waters of southern Africa’s second largest lake (2,000
km2), and compounded in February, when the Zambezi itself broke
its banks in response to further heavy rains, along with several
other major rivers. The situation worsened on 22 February, when
intense tropical cyclone Favio made landfall in Inhambane province
in the south of the country, bringing further heavy rain. |
