Floods - Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya

Territory:   Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya
Region:   Horn of Africa
Date:   November – December 2006
Event:   Floods
Impact:   In Somalia, 116 people have died and a further 454,000 displaced by the floods, as of mid-December, including 299,000 along the Shabelle 155,500 along the Juba. In Kenya, 114 fatalities were reported due to flooding across central, western, eastern, north-eastern, and coastal provinces, between mid-October and mid-December, while a total of more than 720,000 people were affected. In Ethiopia’s south-eastern Somalie region, 80 fatalities are reported with more than 360,000 affected. Many tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed and massive crop and livestock losses have occurred across the region, compounding food problems caused by prolonged drought conditions that preceded the rains.
Summary:   Continued, extreme rainfall across the Horn of Africa between early October and December led to severe flooding across the region. Particularly badly hot were those areas adjacent to the Shabelle and Juba rivers and their tributaries in Ethiopia’s Somali region and in southern Somalia itself. Also severely affected were Kenya’s Tana River, in particular around the towns of Wajir and Garissa, and rivers in west of the country. The extreme and extended nature of the rainy season has been blamed on the prevailing El Niño, and continued problems with torrential rains and flooding are predicted to continue well into 2007.
