Natural Hazards in a Warmer World: Recent Events and Future Prospects

A workshop for the Under 35s Reinsurance Group organised by BUHRC.

Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre and the Under 35s Reinsurance group jointly held a one-day workshop entitled ‘Natural Hazards in a Warmer World: Recent Events and Future Prospects’ at The City Club, 19 Old Broad Street, London on Thursday, 14th October 2004.

This latest one-day workshop, organised in collaboration with UCL (University College London), was designed to bring delegates up do date with current thinking on climate change and its ramifications for natural hazard and risk.

The day consisted of presentations by a range of speakers, eminent in their respective fields, addressing contemporary issues in climate science.

Topics and speakers were:

Tropical cyclones in a warmer world (Dr. Mark Saunders, BUHRC)
   
The response of mid-latitude storms to climate change (Ruth McDonald, Met Office)
   
Climate change and flood risk: Should London move? (Dr. Nick Reynard, Centre for Hydrology & Ecology, Wallingford)
   
Changing flood risk – assessing future climate perils (Dr. Rob Wilby, Environment Agency)
   
Recent and possible future changes in UK rainfall, including wet and dry extremes (Dr. Tim Osborn, Climate Research Unit, UEA)
   
Waterworld or wasteland: flood versus drought in the 21st century (Dr. Ben Lloyd-Hughes, BUHRC)
   
Will global warming make insurers sweat? (Prof David Crichton, BUHRC)

Full programme

The workshop was suitable for all levels of seniority and qualified for up to four hours of structured CII CPD where relevant to an individual’s development needs.
