BENFIELD UCL HAZARD RESEARCH CENTRE'S SEMINAR SERIES,
2006-07

Thursday 5 October, 1.15pm, Prof Jim Cole (University of Canterbury, Christchurch) will be leading a seminar entitled Calderas of the Taupo Volcanic Zone (North Island, New Zealand).
Darwin Lecture Theatre (Darwin Building, Gower Street)

The currently accepted caldera outlines within the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) are derived largely from gravity data, together with a general study of the distribution of ignimbrite outflow sheets and lithic lag breccias. In the last 10 years there has been a major programme, largely through research by PhD students, to better define TVZ caldera structures, evolution and locations. This has resulted in one new caldera being identified (Ohakuri), one deleted (Maroa - a dome complex in Whakamaru) and changing shapes of others. This talk will review current thinking on the calderas of central TVZ, and present results so far from a new programme to evaluate the 3-D structure beneath the Okataina caldera complex, and model sub-volcanic plumbing systems.
