International Disaster Reduction Conference (IDRC)

COGSS project side event.

Subject: Invited Session IDRC Davos 2006 The Schoos Project - Building a resilient future
Date 31.08.06
Time 14:00 – 16:00
Room TBA
Type Invited Session

Description The core intention of the "The Schools Project" is to approach vulnerable communities practicing sub standard construction methods and to educate by example via new builds or restrospective redesign of Schools and Community buildings. The reasoning is multi core including: 1. to set an example to the surrounding inhabitants of resilient construction methods using the School as an focal point and example and using the children as the messengers and local 'culture' developers; 2. to create a secure refuge for the most vulnerable, the Children, in times of disaster ensuring that the Children as the Communities 'future' as local leaders, builders, traders and craftsmen are offered increased survivability; and to offer financially sustainable Insured community refuges by introducing the concept of micro insurance ensuring guaranteed immediate funded repairs and rebuilds after crisis and thus less reliant on international Charitable assistance or crisis depleted Governmental funding. The purpose of the 'Side Event' is to formally launch the proactive project concentrating on creating construction resilient Schools and Community buildings within crisis vulnerable Societies throughout the world who are liable to flood, earthquake, landslide and fire. We will introduce the team of active members including Engineers, Consultants, Data Coordinators and assigned Host Countries to the project and to encourage additional contributors to become involved. We will be publicly introducing asigned funding agents from within the International community including Governmental initiatives, Project grants bodies, Private contributors, the Insurance industry Sponsors and donating Charities, with the hope to encourage additional stakeholders. The desired outcome is that the 'Schools Project' will be adopted as a global strategy to protect and educate vulnerable communities in becoming more resilient by introducing their own assisted 'Disaster Reduction Management Schemes' commencing with the Schools and their Children.
