Hazard & Risk Science Review 2006
Author’s note

Every year brings a reminder of the growing impact of natural hazards on both developed and developing countries. In 2004 it was the Indian Ocean tsunami; last year the Kashmir earthquake and Hurricane Katrina. If we are to improve the forecasting of these disasters and mitigate and manage their consequences more effectively, we must all be aware of the latest research and ideas.

Through encapsulating in the Hazard & Risk Science Review 2006 some of the best work published by the hazard and risk science community over the last 12 months, we hope that we are making a useful contribution to this knowledge-transfer process.

Professor Bill McGuire
Director of the Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre,
author of the Hazard & Risk Science Review
