Protecting Vulnerable Small Islands by Improved Forecasting and WarningFunder: UK Department for International DevelopmentProject holder: BHRC Project manager: Dr. Carmen Solana Senior project staff: Dr. Christopher Kilburn, Professor Bill McGuire, Mr. David Sanderson (CARE UK) There is a strong and growing need for improving communication between scientists, emergency managers and the media prior to and during volcanic crises. Information-gathering exercises undertaken on volcanic islands of the Lesser Antilles that are, or have recently, experienced, volcanic action - Montserrat, Guadeloupe and St. Vincent - have provided the basis for the production of a handbook on COMMUNICATION DURING VOLCANIC EMERGENCIES aimed at the principal stakeholder groups. The findings of the on-island surveys point up the critical importance of (1) bringing together emergency managers, monitoring scientists, and representatives of the media well before the onset of a volcanic crisis, and (2) ensuring that procedures and protocols are in place that will allow, as far as possible, effective and seamless collaboration and coordination when and if a crisis situation develops. COMMUNICATION DURING VOLCANIC EMERGENCIES is designed to promote and encourage both of these priorities through providing the first source-book addressing working relationships and inter-linkages between the stakeholder groups, and providing examples of good and bad practice. Read or download the handbook Hard copies and CD versions of COMMUNICATIONS DURING VOLCANIC EMERGENCIES can be ordered 'at cost' from info@benfieldhrc.org |
