Raising Public Awareness on Landslide Problems in the Barranco de Tirajana, Gran CanariaProject holder: BHRCPrincipal BHRC Researcher: Maria del Carmen Solana García The Barranco de Tirajana is the only short-term landslide prone area in the Canaries. The movements started developing during the Pleistocene and they have continued until present times, as shown by Rosiana zone, reactivated fourth times since 1879. The last destructive movements happened recently (in 1956) and more movements can happen in the future. Since engineering measures to control the movement are not cost-effective, the minimisation of the consequences depends mainly on the planning and preparedness. To evaluate the level of understanding and the possible response of people to a landslide, a series of questionnaires have been spread in zones of the barranco with and without historical movements. The results of these questionnaires have led to the preparation of a pamphlet to increase the awareness and preparedness of the population to a future movement, that will be shortly distributed by the local authorities.
