Improved Seismic Hazard & Risk Maps

A project is underway supported in part by Benfield to make high resolution seismic hazard and risk maps (pdf 607kb) from geological fault slip-rate data. Unlike those constructed from historical earthquake catalogues (which we do not use), the maps are free from seismic gaps and show high spatial resolution. The method can be used for fault systems world-wide, and is best suited to regions with low deformation rates, away from tectonic plate boundaries. Central Italy and the Corinth region of Greece have provided the initial field test sites for the project.
