About Floods

An estimated five million people, two million homes and 185,000 businesses are at risk from flooding in England and Wales every year, with total exposed property, land and assets amounting to £214 billion. Since 1999, twenty people have been killed in floods with many thousands more suffering the trauma associated with damage to home and possessions. The worst floods for many decades occurred in Autumn 2000, with over 10,000 homes flooded and another quarter of a million properties only protected by flood defences. A mere half a metre of floodwater in a modern semi-detached home can require £15 – 30,000 on repair and refurbishment and an additional £9000, on average, to replace damaged possessions. With climate change predicted to result in a warmer, wetter climate with more extreme precipitation events, and continuing construction within flood plains, flood risk in England and Wales can only increase.
