Greig Fester sponsors centre

REINSURANCE broker Greig Fester is sponsoring a Hazards Research Centre at University College London to co-ordinate and build upon natural hazard risk expertise in both the academic and business communities. The Greig Fester Centre for Hazard Research will house seven core staff initially, experts involved in the full range of natural disasters.

It is to be led by Professor Bill McGuire, a trained volcanologist and leading figure in geophysics and geology. He has also acted as consultant to the European Commission‘s climatology and natural hazards unit.

“Our research will be aimed at preventing the needless loss of life and damage to property, and at ensuring the insurance and reinsurance industries have access to the highest level of expertise in such research,” he said.

Chief executive officer, David Spiller, said Greig Fester was active in the application of geographical analysis to insurance portfolios and that the support it was giving underlined its commitment to research and development.

A University College London spokesman said that the move gave future geohazards research and loss prevention a boost in the wake of the recent Iranian earthquake tragedy.
