Adrian Chandler

Specialisation

Professor of Earthquake Engineering

Presently on long-term secondment from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCL. I am working for 3 years (September 1998 - August 2003) at the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong

Research interests   > structural dynamics of linear and non-linear systems
  > earthquakes, earthquake engineering and earthquake-resistant      design
  > earthquake ground motions and response spectra for intraplate      regions
  > earthquake damage assessment and risk/loss analysis
  > post-earthquake damage surveys
  > earthquake response of structures with asymmetric configurations
  > site amplification effects in earthquake ground motions
  > earthquake design methodologies and codes of practice
  > wind effects on buildings, including extreme storm damage

The main thrust of my research over the past 18 months has been to quantify the seismic hazard of the South China region, and to translate this into seismic risk assessment for construction in Hong Kong and in South China generally. I am interested eventually to extend this research into an assessment of building vulnerability to earthquake damage, in regions of relatively low to moderate seismicity. The methodologies being developed to carry this out could be applied in any region of low-moderate seismicity where generally the records of earthquakes are lacking and their expected impact is difficult to predict.
